Barkley Dog Park

The fenced dog park in Evans Park has a separate small-dog area. It is named for Barkley, the golden retriever of Kevin Fischer, the city’s Parks and Recreation director from 2005 until his death in 2019, who pushed for the park, the city’s dog park page says.

Reserving a shelter or room

Seven shelters can be booked through the shelter reservations page: Red Oak and Japanese Maple at Harvey Park, Eastern Redbud and Red Maple at Evans Park, and Sycamore, Dogwood and Tulip Poplar at Fischer Park. Red Oak, Eastern Redbud and Sycamore are closest to the playgrounds. For indoor events, the Winchester Community Center in the lower level of the Winchester Building at Evans Park rents for weekend events, $200 a day, through the city’s Recdesk page.

Trails and greenways

  • Fischer Park has a half-mile walking trail and Harvey Park a quarter-mile loop.
  • Spring Hill battlefield: the American Battlefield Trust has saved more than 195 acres where the Battle of Spring Hill was fought on Nov. 29, 1864, with an interpretive walking trail on Kedron Road at Reserve Boulevard, according to the Trust. More in our history and landmarks guide.
  • Peter Jenkins Greenway: two sections were finished in 2012. A connector has a $1.4 million state grant but no construction date.
  • Harvey Park Greenway: a planned 1.3-mile paved path from Harvey Park to Wilkes Lane, funded in part by a federal Transportation Alternatives grant, is in the design phase.

The long-range plan is the Bicycle and Greenway Plan, adopted in 2015 and updated in 2018.

City events in the parks

Fischer Park hosts the city’s biggest outdoor events: Hill Fest with daytime fireworks in June, Campin’ in the Park overnight in September, and the Trunk or Treat in October. See things to do this month.
