Where to trick-or-treat
There is no city rule on hours, so plan around daylight. Halloween is the last evening before the clocks change: daylight saving time ends at 2 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 1, so set clocks back an hour before bed. Before you go, you can check the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation’s sex offender registry by address.
Candy safety
The FDA’s Halloween tips for parents:
- Feed children a light meal before they go out, and have them wait to eat treats until you have looked through them at home.
- Throw away anything that is not commercially wrapped, and anything with an odd look, discoloring, tiny pinholes or torn wrappers.
- If your child has a food allergy, read every label, and skip home-baked treats.
- For very young children, take out choking hazards such as gum, peanuts, hard candy and small toys.
On the street
- Drivers: slow down in neighborhoods on Halloween evening, and watch for children crossing between parked cars.
- Walkers: carry a flashlight or glow sticks, stay on sidewalks where there are some, and stay in groups.
- Younger children should go out with an adult.
- Electric scooters and e-bikes: the Spring Hill Police Department has published rules of the road for e-bikes, scooters and golf carts on public streets; check them before a child rides to a party.
What this means for you
Mark Oct. 24 for the city event and Oct. 31 for door-to-door. If your neighborhood association sets its own hours, those are the ones your neighbors will follow.
